Does your Past dictate your Future?

Life can throw you some real challenges. And sometimes those challenges are all we can remember - they dictate every part of who we are.
I wrote a blog on another page I manage in 2014 and I think that a lot of it is relevant here, so I have shared some of it with you below.
Sometimes moving forward from a challenge can feel like having one hand tied to a solid post and the other tied to a fast moving train!
You can feel so stuck in the past, while the rest of your world keeps moving forward trying to take you with it!
For me, in the beginning, the whole concept of moving on with life when my past had such a tight hold was mind blowing and hard to comprehend. When you are struggling to get through a simple daily task, the mere thought of what lies ahead tomorrow is just too much. And I have done my fair share of yelling and screaming at people who have tried to push me forward before I was ready!
Your past, your experiences and your life have brought you to this point – just as mine has brought me here today. And from this point on we all have two choices:
we can stay in the past or we can choose to move forward.
I have made the choice to move forward. But don’t panic, if you choose to stay today because it is to much for you to move forward, you haven’t missed the train. It will stop at your station again, and you will have the choice – and when ready, you can move forward and into the future.
I sometimes find myself circling back to the same spot and revisiting my past, or going around in circles. I just need to remember that as long as I’m moving I can still make that choice to move forward. It is when you stop and move in with your past, make that your final destination, that your healing will stop.
If we think about how a road is built around a tall mountain, it isn’t built to go straight to the top and over. They spiral their way up the mountain and back down. I see my journey a lot like this. Each time I circle back to the other side of the mountain I am looking at where I started from a different view point. I am stronger and will have a better view of the past. I am further away from it and I am less attached to the feelings and memories associated with it – the things that held me in that place. The higher I go, the more of the bigger picture I can see, and the smaller my starting point becomes. Even when I reach the top of the mountain – I will still be able to see where I started, but that place will be small and pale in comparison to the view I now have of what lies ahead of me – the opportunities and places I can go.
I want to build my future like I would my dream home. I wouldn’t build the roof or the walls without a solid foundation first. I want my dream home to last, to go the distance and be something I am proud of. I want to build it right – the same is true of my future. I want to make sure I am putting all the right steps in place before I go there.
Building the right foundation and making sure it is solid before moving onto the next part of your jounrey is really important, it makes for a stable place for you to rest and to take in what you have achieved, and what you need to do next. Take as much time building your future as you would your dream house. Making a solid home is making a safe home, something you can count on. As time goes on, cracks may appear in your dream home, but if the house has been built right, they won’t threaten the integrity of what you have created. In fact, with age and time, those cracks will add to the character and story of what you have built!
Moving forward isn’t about forgetting your past, it is about making the choice to have a future – to have a life and to really live it! It is about creating wonderful moments and enjoying your present.
What choice are you going to make today?
